International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. While women make up half of the world’s population, they are a minority in the business world. Only 7% of Fortune 500 Companies are run by women (Fortune, Jan 2020). More and more women are moving into leadership positions, however, these positions are far from being equally represented.

Research shows that employees on a diverse and inclusive team produce better work, put in more effort, and demonstrate more commitment. There is no denying the importance of diversity in the workplace. However, the self-storage industry is statistically male-dominated and lacking in diversity. The Self Storage Association (SSA) is the official trade organization and voice of the U.S. and international self-storage industry. They have a women’s council and mentoring program that focuses on growing the self-storage industry with shared knowledge, resources, and support.  This group also has a program for women to become a mentor or mentee that can build connection and trust between women in the self-storage industry.

International Women’s Day

The International Women’s Day organization is a great place for women in the workforce to find resources. On this website, you can find information for social media, posters, speeches, activities, work meetings, and more. Find downloadable resources and tools, and women-owned event suppliers and speakers on this website to help your company support IWD.

SBA - U.S. Small Business Administration

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has collaborated with many organizations to put together the best resources available to women entrepreneurs. Whether you are a woman interested in starting a business, applying for a business loan, finding government contracting opportunities, or improving an existing business, this page is a good point of reference for you.

Local Business Groups

There are many business groups such as Rotary International, Chamber of Commerce, BNI, and more that are designed for business professionals to meet, share ideas, and network. While these groups are not always women-focused, they are often open to all genders and may have breakout groups that focus on women. Check with your local clubs and organizations for more information on what they offer.
